http://golions.fatcow.com/FineArts/IMG_4736_JPG.jpg Covenant Day School firmly believes the fine arts are an essential part of each student's academic experience. The Fine Arts Department is dedicated to the biblical truth that creativity is an essential aspect of the nature and character of God and, as such, is an important part of what it means to be God’s image bearers created to love and glorify Him. With this understanding, the Fine Arts Department strives to educate students to understand, appreciate, engage and pursue excellence in the various creative disciplines. We seek to provide a Christ-centered, comprehensive arts instruction in order to equip students with knowledge and skills, cultivate confidence and appreciation, and encourage personal growth as they explore their creativity.

“Let everything that has breath,
praise the LORD.”  Psalm 150:6

Today’s Date: 4/13/10

On April 9 & 10, Covenant Day School drama students attended the Christians in Theatre Arts (CITA) Secondary School Theatre Festival hosted by Charlotte Christian School.  This is an annual competition open to private, public and homeschooled students to provide the opportunity to sharpen skills through competitions in the areas of contrasting monologues, full length monologues, duo and ensemble acting scenes, and solo, duo and ensemble musical theatre scenes.  Each performance was evaluated by a panel of CITA judges, who are college professors or heads of theater departments.  Ratings ranged from Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, to Honorable Mention.  The judges made it clear that they were not going to be lenient in their evaluations, one stating “after all, we are teachers, and we are entitled to give C’s and D’s”.

Drawing performers from the Charlotte, Asheville, Norfolk, and Atlanta areas, the festival was graciously hosted by Charlotte Christian students and parents.  All of the performers exhibited a passion and love for theater, and enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Covenant Day School students received a minimum of “excellent” ratings in their categories.  However, Emma Van de Velde and Claire Weigel both received “superior” ratings for their musical theater solo performances.  Claire Weigel received the award for the best overall performance in this category.

The next CITA festival is tentatively scheduled to be held in Greenville, SC in January 2011.

1st row (l to r): KJ Fon-Ndikum, Emma Van deVelde
2nd row (l to r): Henny Rau, Anna Farish, Sammi Choi, Claire Weigel
3rd row (l to r): Emma Smith, Mrs. Thomas, Katherine Murdoch

Claire Weigel wins best overall performance in the musical theatre solo category. Claire and Emma both received superior ratings by the adjudicators.
