Computers for Students
Mobile Computers for High School Students:
All Covenant Day High School students purchase a tablet laptop computer for their use both in and out of the classroom. The mobile computing program gives teachers and students around-the-clock access to laptop computers. Computers are seamlessly integrated as tools into major curriculum areas. The laptops enable students to access, analyze, manipulate, and present information using real-world business applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and FrontPage. While on campus, students also have continuous but filtered access to the vast resources of the Internet. Tablet laptops allow the students to use their computers in classes such as math and art, courses where standard laptops are ineffective. Research has shown that the quality of written work is greatly improved for students using computers because the student can focus on the quality of the content of an assignment without being hindered by the mechanics of a hand-written paper. |
Computer Labs for Lower and Middle School Students:
Covenant Day School maintains two fully-functioning computer labs. One is designed for Lower School use. It houses twenty-four networked computers with software and hardware designed to meet the needs of the students in Transitional Kindergarten through fifth grade. Classes at each grade level have designated time in the computer lab each week with instruction from the Lower School Computer Teacher. The Middle School also has a computer lab with twenty-four computers with filtered, high-speed internet access. The lab is used by various classes in the middle school for research. In addition, numerous elective courses in computer science are offered to middle school students taught by the Middle School Computer Teacher. These courses include everything from basic keyboarding skills to the use of every-day applications such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to web design using the Adobe Dreamweaver software package. |
Computers for Teachers
Every teacher at Covenant Day School is given 24/7 access to a mobile computer. These include laptops, tablets, and netbooks. These computers, combined with a number of SMART boards and LCD projectors allow teachers the opportunity to make the most of internet resources in their teaching. They also provide teachers with greater access to communication options necessary to interact with each other, with parents, and even students.
High-Speed, Filtered Internet Access
Campus-wide Internet access is filtered by Websense Enterprise software. Websense is an industry-leading web filtering and web security technology to protect our students outside as well as inside our campus network. Websense Remote Filtering protects our students from external security threats and prevents access to inappropriate and malicious sites both on and off campus. No filter is perfect, and no filter can block 100% of dangerous or inappropriate sites, so in addition to the filtering we have put in place, we remind parents to be aware and vigilant regarding their student’s Internet availability and activity.
| Websense filtering will allows us to: |
- Protect students from phishing sites, spyware, malicious mobile code (MMC), and inappropriate content.
- Apply the same policies and level of protection, whether students are on or off campus – twenty-four hours a day – seven days a week.

Benefits to CDS Families
The CDS Technology Program enhances the educational experience of our students in many ways:
- Christian Witness – It will be necessary for the next generation to know how to use technology appropriately and effectively if they are to be successful in impacting their community and culture.
|
- Motivation of Students – The availability of technology gives the students added internal incentive to make the most of educational opportunities presented to them.
|
- Academic Relevance – The mobile computers are used as a resource to give students access to almost unlimited information in a timely manner.
|
- Greater Efficiency for Faculty – The faculty have also been provided tablet computers giving them the same access that students have. This allows them to increase efficiency in both preparation and implementation of our curriculum.
|
- Improved and More Efficient Communication with Parents and Students – The mobile computers have given our school a faster and more effective means of communication between the family and the school, allowing us to work toward our mission of partnering with parents.
|
- Faculty computer literacy – The use of tablets brings our faculty computer literacy to a level equivalent to other professionals. Our faculty has been trained to use technology in a professional way and this has, in turn, allowed our students to be well-prepared for the professional world upon graduation.
